ABIA meets Crystal Feldman, a Yeppoon-based florist specialising in dried and preserved wedding flower arrangements

Working as a station hand in Australia’s rugged outback, Crystal Feldmen spent her quieter moments picking wattle and wildflowers, and when injury forced her to reconsider her path it was this passion for florals that inspired a new direction.
“I delved into the world of dried and preserved floristry, honing my skills and eventually launching my own business catering to weddings,” Crystal explains.
Today as owner and head florist at Inflorescence CQ, in Yeppoon Queensland, she creates everlasting wedding florals — from bridal bouquets and buttonholes to ceremony and reception installations and arrangements — as well as offering a hire service combining ‘real touch’ silk flowers.
Crystal stepped away from her roses, orchids and pampas grass to chat to ABIA about her unique wedding florals, and to highlight the many benefits of choosing dried, preserved and silk flowers.

Tell us about your business and wedding services.
We offer a range of wedding floristry services, from bridal bouquets and boutonnieres to bespoke floral installations, flower crowns, ceremony flowers and everything in between. We work mostly with locally-sourced real flowers, that have been dried and preserved, but also hire silk, or ‘real touch’, flowers.
We offer the option to hire items because we believe that everyone deserves a big, beautiful, lavish wedding. We do not have minimum spends and we work within all budgets. Our brides love being able to see the creations before the day, so they know exactly what they are getting.
How did you get started in the wedding industry?
I was a station hand, but suffered some injuries that left me seeking a new path. That’s when I began dreaming of working with flowers.
I delved into the world of dried and preserved floristry, honing my skills and eventually launching Inflorescence CQ, to offer couples personalised, long-lasting floral designs that bring joy and beauty to their special day.

Where are you based and what locations do you service?
We are based in Yeppoon and travel all over Queensland for weddings. Our bouquets and boutonnieres can be shipped Australia-wide.
What inspired you to start working with flowers?
As a teenager, I spent countless hours drawing and painting flowers, captivated by their beauty, and my fascination with flowers continued during my days as a station hand, where I found solace in picking wattle and wildflowers amidst the rugged Australian outback. These experiences fuelled my passion for floristry and led me to the work I do today.

What sorts of wedding bouquets and arrangements do you offer? Which are the most popular?
Working with dried and preserved flowers allows us to 'beat the seasons'. From preserved roses and orchids to dried daisies and gum, we can curate almost anything any time of the year.
Fluffy pampas-grass-based bouquets are our most popular, however we’re seeing increasing interest in our crystal bouquets and flower crowns, which combine our everlasting flowers with personally selected, meaningful crystals.
What hire options do you offer?
Our hire options include table centrepieces, dry arbour hire, welcome signs, selfie mirrors (combining mirror and florals), floral attachments for arbours, plinths, aisle arrangements, hanging installations and ground arrangements. Transportation, installation, re-purposing and collection are all included in our hire packages.

Where do you source your dried and preserved florals?
We source many of our flowers from local growers in the central Queensland area, then dry them ourselves. Others we obtain from a grower in Melbourne. And our preserved florals come from a supplier in Brisbane.

Why do you suggest couples opt for dried or preserved flowers for their wedding day? What are the advantages over fresh flowers?
Dried or preserved flowers offer several advantages over fresh flowers for a wedding day.
- Longevity - they last much longer than fresh flowers, allowing couples to enjoy their beauty for months, or even years, afterward.
- No Seasonal Limitations – unlike fresh flowers, which are subject to seasonal availability and price fluctuations, dried and preserved flowers are available year-round.
- Sustainability – they offer couples an eco-friendly choice, as they require no water or refrigeration during transportation and storage.
- Versatility – they are incredibly versatile and can be used in a wide range of floral arrangements, including bouquets, centrepieces, and installations. They are also lightweight, making them ideal for destination weddings or venues with limited floral arrangements.
- Consistency – they maintain their shape, colour and size, allowing couples to plan and visualise their wedding decor with confidence.
Foraging Joy
At what stage of the planning process should couples be looking at wedding flowers? How far in advance should they book?
Couples should start considering their wedding flowers as soon as possible, or up to 12 months before their wedding day. Flowers play a vital role in enhancing the overall aesthetic of the day and should complement the venue and other decorative elements seamlessly. Starting early allows couples to explore different options and fine-tune their choices, to ensure flowers harmonise with a venue’s ambiance and create a cohesive look throughout the ceremony and reception.
