Having shot more than 300 weddings, in Australia and internationally, Whistler Li knows a thing or two about wedding photography and videography.

“I truly believe love is in the eyes,” he says. With that in mind, he encourages his couples to relax and be themselves in order to capture the magic of their connection.

We spent some time with Whistler, to chat package options, booking advice and the weddings he most remembers.

Tell us about your business and services.

I’ve shot more than 300 weddings for the wildly in love. I capture special wedding moments with creative photography, and create cherished memories to last a lifetime.

How did you get started in the wedding industry?

My first wedding photoshoot was on New Year’s Eve. The couple set a white theme for the wedding, which was in their front yard. It was a lovely wedding with close friends and family. It made that New Year’s Eve so memorable, and was a great introduction to wedding photography for me.

What locations do you service?

I service Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba.

What got you interested in filming and photography?

I’ve always loved to capture moments, love, laughter, moods and memories through my camera.

Where do you get your creative inspiration?

I follow bridal magazines to keep up with the latest trends, but I prefer to take a natural and relaxed approach, instead of asking couples to pose.

Are there challenges when recording both the video and photos for a wedding? How do you manage both mediums?

Communication and cooperation are very important. I make sure to communicate clearly with each couple before their wedding, to understand what they expect and make sure things flow smoothly.

Do you offer packages?

Yes, I offer photo packages, video packages and combined photography and videography packages, which I offer at discounted rates.

What’s the most interesting wedding you’ve ever shot?

I attended a wedding with more than 500 guests, that started at 6am and continued until midnight. The vibe, energy and food made it feel like a festival.

What’s your favourite location?

My favourite location is Gabbinbar Homestead in Toowoomba — it’s absolutely stunning.

What do you suggest couples look for in a photographer and videographer? How far in advance should they book?

I believe everyone has different ideas and styles they like so, when looking for a photographer and videographer, I suggest couples look at portfolios to get an idea of themes they like. I also highly recommend booking up to a year in advance.

What was your favourite wedding?

I photographed a wedding in Izu, Japan, with only 20 of the couple’s closest family and friends present. The couple had rented a holiday home, and organised almost everything DIY — including an arbour which was handmade by the couple’s parents, and flowers that were handpicked and decorated by the bride. They invited a famous chef to cater, and it was a warm and lovely celebration.

What makes your service unique?

After shooting more than 300 weddings I’ve learned a few things. I believe that every wedding is unique and precious because the faces and emotions are different. My philosophy is to let the photos talk, and tell the story of each wedding day through my images.

I encourage my couples to express themselves and be themselves, so that I can capture the most natural moments of their interactions. I truly believe love is in the eyes.
