A Moment With Between The Covers
ABIA meets the talented musician who fronts the popular, Queensland and Victoria based, wedding band and entertainment agency

Becky Rhodes was about four-years-old when she remembers starting music lessons. Her parents decided the lessons were a good idea, because she sang more than she talked, and made up songs about everything.
“I would put on concerts at Christmas time, for all my extended family, and force my cousins to be my back-up singers and dancers,” she laughs.
Years on, Becky is still singing and playing music but, as the leader of ‘Between The Covers’, a musical group and entertainment agency based in Queensland and Victoria, she now has a team of high calibre musicians to support her.
ABIA disappeared backstage, to chat acoustics, live music and DJing with the seasoned wedding performer.

Tell us about your wedding entertainment service.
‘Between The Covers’ is both a music group and an entertainment agency that offers soloists, acoustic duos, live bands and DJing services for weddings and events. A lot of clients like to mix-and-match our services to create the perfect wedding package to suit their needs.
How did you get started in the wedding industry?
My acoustic duo started in bars and pubs in Melbourne, and then we began getting booked for weddings via Instagram — it's just grown and grown from there.

Where are you based and what locations do you service?
We’re based in Queensland, servicing the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and Victoria, servicing Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Valley and the Geelong Coast.
When did you realise you wanted to turn your talent into a business?
I started singing and playing music from a very young age, and my parents encouraged it by enrolling me in singing, dance, drama and music classes. I always knew I wanted to be a performer!

What genres of music do you offer? Which are your favourites?
We offer a bit of everything! We mainly stick to the classics, and pop, rock, soul, jazz and indie. Indie pop is probably my personal favourite style to sing.
What should couples look for in a wedding entertainer? And how far should they book you in advance?
I think couples should look for someone who fits their vibe, style and aesthetic — someone who has a voice, or plays music, that makes them happy! I'd recommend booking us 9 to 12 months in advance, as our dates fill up fast.
What makes your service unique?
Couples can create their own wedding package to suit their day — have a soloist for the ceremony, a band for the reception and end the night with some DJ sets. We can do it all. We’re also young, stylish, talented and professional musicians and performers, with our finger on the pulse.

What is the most unusual, inspiring or surprising wedding idea you've come across?
A wedding I was at recently had a surprise kebab truck for the guests at the end of the night. That was a fun idea I'd never seen before!
What was your favourite wedding?
That’s too hard to answer — there's been so many! The ones that stand out all had massive, rocking dancefloors though!
How would you describe the couples that you connect with the most?
The couples who love music, who want fun and flare and who are just keen on having a great night!
