Surrounded by fine gold, diamonds and precious gems from an early age, it was perhaps inevitable that jewellery designer Andrew Mazzone, of prestige Adelaide jeweller Andrew Mazzone Design Jewellers, would end up in the industry.
“I first became interested by watching my father in his workshop creating jewellery, after he started his business in 1960,” Andrew explains.
The Mazzone name has been synonymous with stunning jewellery for more than 60 years, and these days the family business is renowned for the one-off bespoke pieces and custom-designed engagement and wedding rings that it delivers to the couples of Adelaide.
Andrew set aside some time to chat with us about mined and lab-grown diamonds, one of his favourite engagement ring designs and the latest wedding jewellery trends.
Tell us about your business and wedding jewellery services.
We custom make and manufacture engagement rings, wedding rings and bespoke jewellery, specialising in one-of-a-kind engagement rings, using both mined and lab-grown diamonds. We repair and remodel jewellery and love giving older jewellery designs a fresh new look. Our new studio is designed for couples to sit down, relax and enjoy our service experience and offers a ‘diamond room’ for customers who prefer a private consultation. We showcase diamond, gold and coloured gemstone jewellery and a range of Italian gold crosses.
How did you get started in the both the jewellery and wedding industries?
My father, Quinto Mazzone, started our family business in 1960, and I began my apprenticeship when I turned 18. Later I studied a Bachelor of Jewellery Design at the University of South Australia. I always had a passion for drawing and designing, so I started to do more custom designing of engagement and wedding rings.
Where are you located?
We are based in Adelaide’s CBD in the vibrant East End, which is home to the Adelaide Fringe Festival, chic fashion designers, restaurants and bars.
When did you first take an interest in jewellery?
I first became interested in jewellery by watching my father create jewellery in his workshop — ours is a family legacy that’s endured for more than half a century.
How long have you been working in the jewellery industry?
My father started our family business in 1960 and I began my apprenticeship in 1987, so 38 years.
What wedding jewellery design trends are you seeing at the moment?
Yellow gold continues to shine and wider ring bands are becoming more popular. Oval diamonds are still in demand, but I feel marquise-cut diamonds will appear more this year. Trilogy ring designs, featuring three stones, are also increasing in popularity.
What are the key pieces of wedding jewellery couples should consider?
Beautiful custom-made wedding bands that match the existing engagement ring. Wedding bands and engagement rings symbolise a couple’s love, so we like to ensure our couples are happy with their forever rings.
Brides to be will often purchase diamond studs or a diamond tennis bracelet to wear on their big day. Beyond that our couples often return to add another diamond band to complement their bridal set, either for an anniversary or the birth of a baby.
What should couples consider when selecting or designing wedding jewellery?
We find that the source of diamonds is a consideration for many couples. We believe in personal choice, so offer both mined and lab-grown diamond options for our customers and take them on a ‘diamond journey’, explaining the features and benefits of each option, to empower them to make the decision that best suits them.
You must hear a lot of marriage proposal stories. Do you have a favourite?
We have so many beautiful proposal stories that feature on our social media pages and love story blogs. Ben was a recent favourite — he proposed to his partner Kayla while they were waterskiing and still got down on one knee! Another lovely story involved Keegan, who proposed to Persia after hot air ballooning in Turkey, and followed it with a proposal photo shoot showing the spectacular hot air balloons above them.
What’s been the most memorable piece of wedding jewellery you’ve designed?
Recently, we custom-made an east-west floating pear-cut solitaire diamond, set on an intricately-curved yellow gold band. It was stunning and very memorable!
How do most of your couples find you?
Most of our wonderful customers are referred to us by family and friends who have enjoyed our service experience. New customers also research Adelaide jewellers online and come into our studio because of our excellent reviews.
What makes your bespoke jewellery service unique?
We stand out due to our attentive customer service experience and our ability to ‘think outside the square’ with intricate and unique jewellery designs.
