He’s a wedding magician, a mind reader and a master of ceremonies, but above all else Tom Weil considers himself an ice-breaker.

“I know how to encourage conversation early on, connect members of families, and fill 'down-time' in the program,” the talented wedding entertainer explains.

It’s hardly surprising to learn that in his 15 years as a wedding magician and mind reader — performing both in Australia and internationally — he’s picked up a few tricks.

ABIA caught up with the South-Australian-based entertainer between acts, to uncover more about his aptitude for illusion, wedding hosting and magic.

Tell us about your business.

I’ve been making weddings magic for over 15 years. As an award-winning wedding magician, and mind reader, I entertain throughout the reception, breaking the ice and creating long-lasting, memorable experiences for wedding guests.

How did you get started in the wedding industry?

I started entertaining with close-up magic during cocktail hour and dinner and now — after many years of wedding experience — also offer a complete MC hosting package.

What locations do you service?

I’m based in Adelaide, South Australia, but perform all over Australia and internationally.

What does a wedding magician do?

I usually start during the cocktail reception. I'll mingle with the guests, as they filter through from the ceremony, and entertain as they await seating for dinner.

I'll approach groups and entertain with close-up magic, so they can experience the illusions right in front of them and even in their own hands. It gets people talking and relaxed before the dinner.
Then, once guests are seated, I continue in between the serving of different courses, so there's never a dull moment.

What does a magical master of ceremonies do?

On top of roving entertainment throughout the event, I act as an on-the-day planner and master of ceremonies. I make all the important announcements, make sure guests know where to be and when, and entertain with a short mind-reading show before the main courses come out. I keep it fun, slick and magical!

What do you love about weddings?

As a performer, it’s a special feeling to know you’re contributing to such a magical and joyful moment in people's lives.

What’s your role at weddings, and what makes you different?

I’m the ice-breaker, and I also provide unique and memorable entertainment. My years of experience mean I know how to encourage conversation early on, connect members of the families, and fill 'down-time' in the program to eliminate guest boredom.

Where can couples see you in action?

The easiest place to get a feel for my performance style is on my YouTube channel

What’s your advice to couples planning a wedding?

Consider the times when guests are just waiting for the next thing to happen — waiting to be called for photos, waiting for the newly-weds’ arrival at the reception, waiting for entrees to be served. Close-up magic is perfect for filling in those moments.

Do you have a favourite wedding?

I've performed at some crazy, luxurious, over-the-top weddings, but my favourites are always the most intimate — the ones filled with just a few close friends and family, and a real celebration of what's important.
