We recently had the opportunity to interview ABIA-Award Winning (South Australia 2018) James Field Photography on his locations, tips, prices and more!
A Little Bit About James Field Photography.
James Field Photography is the talented man who was titled Best Wedding Photographer at the 18th South Australian ABIA Annual Bridal Industry Awards.
When meeting with James, he mentioned his love for organic in-between moments - creating a fun, easy-going environment where natural candid photos happen organically.
Not only does James want you to love your photos, but he really pays attention to you and your bridal parties enjoying the day taking the photographs! After all, your photographer will be with you for most of your wedding day.
Most Popular Photography Locations
James is based in the Adelaide hills, so most of his work tends to be in and around the hills. The other locations are mostly in Adelaide City, McLaren Vale, Barossa and Kangaroo Island. James also travels frequently around Australia (mostly to the east coast) and internationally (mostly to South East Asia).
James’ Photography Tips
A good Prime Minister isn’t necessarily someone you’d like to share a beer or coffee with. However, a good wedding photographer is! Your photographer is going to be hanging around with you for a very large proportion on the day.
How a photographer makes you, your family, your bridal party feel is going to have an affect not only on your photos, but also your day. Do they make you laugh? Are they a relaxed person or are they going to increase the stress of the day?
Tip # 1 - Personality Fit
Finding a photographer that fits your personality is so important. In the beginning of the search, find a few photographers online or via recommendations that have the style of photography you like.
Organise a time to meet and you can quickly figure out how you get along, how they make you feel and if they answer all the right questions. That’ll make the decision of which photographer to book much simpler.
Tip # 2 - Take Photos in the Night
Sneaking out of the reception for 15 minutes during the reception for some ‘golden hour,’ or night time photos can really add to the variety of your wedding photos.
In a magical light, the photos will be quite unlike all the other shots you’d have taken throughout day, and it can be really lovely to have a bit of a breather in amongst all the crazy of the evening.
It may not necessarily be the right thing for all couples, however those precious minutes with just you and your love to share can really be memorable.
Tip # 3 - Plan, but more importantly have fun!
Lastly, plan as much as you want beforehand, but on the day just have fun, relax and go with whatever happens. The photos will show you having a great care-free time, you won’t be able to see that the timeline is running 15 mins behind!
Photography Prices
James offers one simple package for the one price of $4200.
It doesn’t matter how many hours he is with you or how kms he drives to get to the venue, you’ve got him for the day and he can do whatever you want to do in that time.
Photography can start whenever you want in the morning (normally that’s just after hair and makeup so the girls have a chance to settle in first) and he will leave the reception when you do.

James' Wedding Photo Albums
I just started a new type of wedding album I’ve not seen anyone else do, and I’m really excited about them. They’re 110 pages, and include all the photos from the day. I usually deliver around 600 or so photos, so these albums are big and really comprehensive.
With other albums these days, couples have to painfully whittle their photos down to their favorite 80 or so, but most of the time they can’t.
Because of these efficiencies, the albums are only an additional $700 to upgrade from the proofbook in my package. They come in three different covers – black or tan leatherette, grey buckram, or a photo cover.
We also have a Photo Booth!
Photobooths capture a totally different side of the reception. The printed strips make for perfect wedding memories. Even people who aren’t a fan of having their photo taken can’t help but pull creative faces when standing in front of a booth, its amazing to see!
Using an open style of booth becomes a piece of entertainment for the guests. In these open booths - people crowd around, are jumping in and out, everyone gets to enjoy the action, its all so much more fun and manic and makes for even better photos.
Just make sure you find a booth with good quality lighting and printing! The studio quality light on our booths is really flattering, which encourages people to go back to the booth often throughout the night.
The booth has gorgeous lighting and perfectly calibrated printers for the best quality strips in Adelaide. They’re an extra $800 for the night, and include unlimited strips and digital copies of the strips & photos, a guest book and props on sticks.
