ABIA meets Ethan Li, the artist that heads this Melbourne-based wedding photography studio.

Born into a family of photographers, Ethan Li found himself behind a camera lens at an early age.
His first photo was of his dog but, while pets still feature alongside their owners in many of his wedding photographs, it’s the couples themselves that captivate him after more than 20 years in the industry.
“Every couple has a distinct love story, and I draw inspiration from their unique personalities, connections, and emotions. Their love and chemistry fuel my creativity, allowing me to capture intimate and authentic moments that reflect their journey together,” Ethan explains.
ABIA sat down with Ethan, to flip through his extensive portfolio and chat experience, ingenuity and exceeding expectations.

Tell us about your business and wedding photography services.
With more than 20 years’ experience and a keen eye for detail, we specialise in creating stunning, timeless images that reflect the unique love story of each couple. Our approach is tailored to each client, ensuring we capture the essence of their wedding day in a way that is authentic and true to who they are.
We believe that every couple deserves to have their special day documented with care, and we strive to make that happen. From the first consultation to the final delivery of images, we are committed to providing exceptional service and quality that exceeds expectations.
Where are you based and what locations do you service?
We’re based in Melbourne, Victoria, but service all of Australia and New Zealand.

Do you offer packages? What are the inclusions?
Yes. Our wedding photography packages include touch-ups, a wedding album, all digital copies of photos and an unlimited number of photos taken within the package timeframe.
What got you interested in photography? Do you remember your first photo?
I was born into a photography family. Both my parents are photographers and own successful businesses so, naturally, I took an interest in art, painting and photography at a very early age. I was just a little kid when I took my first photo of my dog!
Where do you get your creative inspiration?
Nature plays a significant role — beautiful landscapes and elements, like rain, provide a captivating backdrop for unique moments — and the way natural light interacts with the surroundings can creating a sense of magic and atmosphere.
Every couple has a distinct love story too, and I draw inspiration from their unique personalities, connections, and emotions. Their love and chemistry fuel my creativity, allowing me to capture intimate and authentic moments that reflect their journey.

What are the most interesting photos you’ve ever taken?
Those where couples get their pets involved — sometimes they really steal the show!
What are your favourite photographic locations?
It sounds cheesy, but I love all wedding venues. I’ve photographed at Yarra Valley wineries, beaches, forests, cliffs, farms, churches, gardens, castles and even the Melbourne Zoo.
What do you do when it rains?
I view it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Rain can add a sense of romance and drama to photographs, creating a unique atmosphere that enhances the storytelling. So, I often embrace the rain, but I always have alternative locations in mind too — indoor settings with beautiful architecture or unique lighting. Flexibility is key in adverse weather conditions, and I always strive to provide my clients with memorable images regardless of the circumstances.

What do you suggest couples look for in a photographer?
It's important to find a photographer whose style resonates with your vision and aesthetic preferences, so review portfolios as a starting point.
Look for a photographer with a solid track record and years of experience — this helps ensure they can handle various lighting conditions, manage time effectively, and capture all the important moments.
Communication and rapport are also vital. A good photographer should be attentive, responsive, and willing to listen to your needs and ideas. And reviews and testimonials, from previous clients, can provide valuable insights into a photographer's professionalism, reliability, and the overall experience they offer.
How far in advance should they book?
As early as possible!

What was your favourite wedding?
I still shed tears looking at the parents on a wedding day, so one of the most memorable was a wedding I shot during Covid-lockdown. The parents on both sides were overseas, watching via Zoom, and the Father-of-the-Bride asked me to give his daughter a hug on his behalf.
Another memorable wedding took place just after marriage equality was recognised in Australia. I photographed one of my closest colleagues — a celebrant — who was finally able to marry his partner of 20 years.
