Handmaking candles began as a hobby for Lacy Cook of Victorian-based Yarra Valley Candle Company. Initially it was a lovely way to spend quality time with her creative daughter, but when she started helping a friend plan her wedding she noticed an opportunity.

“I saw a huge gap in the market for gifts that were purposeful, meaningful and could be repurposed,” Lacy explains.

She started handcrafting candles as wedding bomboniere to fill that need and these days her wedding favors can be customised and personalised to suit any wedding theme or message, and shipped out for weddings across Australia.

ABIA sat down with Lacy while she waxed lyrical about the design options, scents and presentation styles that make Yarra Valley Candles shine.

Tell us about your wedding favor and bomboniere services?

Our handcrafted customised candles are tailored personally for each couple, and include their choice of design, scent and personal details, making them a truly unique and memorable gift for wedding guests to take with them and enjoy afterward. We wanted to provide couples with a perfect way to spoil their guests, while adding a warm and inviting atmosphere to their wedding reception, and we think our candles do just that.

What inspired Yarra Valley Candle Company, and how did you get started in the wedding industry?

I was helping my friend plan a wedding when I noticed a gap in the market for a wedding guest gift that everyone would love, take home and reuse or repurpose. At the time my little girl and I had just started making candles for markets as a hobby, so I saw the opportunity, combined the two and quickly launched our range of purposeful, memorable and meaningful wedding guest gifts.

Where are you based and what locations do you service?

We are based in Victoria’s Yarra Valley, but we can ship our finished handcrafted candles for weddings Australia-wide.

What are the advantages of your candles, and what makes them stand out?

We have put a lot of time into sourcing the best materials and ingredients, and into perfecting our formulas and methods to help ensure we can offer our couples the highest-quality handcrafted soy candles.

We’ve also put a lot of thought and planning into our production processes, and into creating a sustainably conscious product and we are very proud of the outcome.

Once our candles are burnt, the personalised tin can be washed with warm soapy water and reused to hold items like trinkets, coins or jewellery, so guests are left with a lasting keepsake of the

wedding day.

How can couples incorporate your candles into their wedding day?

I have seen our candles displayed in many beautiful ways and they make a lovely addition to wedding place settings and table arrangements.

At my own wedding, we had them piled in plinths, available for people to take throughout the night, or as they left.

Because scent often triggers memories, we also opted to burn a single scent at our reception and used the same fragrance for all 120 of our guest favors, so they’re instantly transported back to our special night whenever they burn their candles.
At what stage of the planning process should couples book their candles?

Once an order has been placed, we reach out within the week with design ideas and once couples have approved their design our production process takes place about six to eight weeks before their event to ensure enough time for the candles to set before we package them. Once ready, we either post the candles anywhere in Australia or organise collection, taking care to ensure they don’t overheat or become exposed to adverse conditions.

How can couples personalise their candles to suit their wedding style or theme?

Our templates, designs, scents and tin colour are all completely customisable. And if couples have a wedding logo we can incorporate that too, so our candles can be matched to their wedding stationery.

What is the best way you’ve seen your candles used in a wedding display?

I’ve seen our candles styled in so many beautiful ways and love it when we receive professional photos of them on table arrangements, carefully positioned among place settings and floral centrepieces — it makes me so proud to be a small part of a couple’s big day.
