But first, let's talk wedding cake selection!
It's no easy feat to select the perfect wedding cake for your big day. There are so many incredible designers, jaw-dropping styles, and of course, taste matters! So here are a few of our top tips on how to choose a wedding cake & cake designer that is right for you.
Size Matters
It goes without saying but the bigger the guest list, the bigger the cake required. Generally, three tiers will serve 50 to 100 guests while 200 guests or more will likely have you selecting a five-layer cake. Of course, you can always opt for a small cake that's decorated to perfection but simply add several slab cakes of the same flavour to actually feed the guests or mix it up with other delicious desserts.
Theme & style
Wedding cakes can make a stunning addition to the overall theme and style of your wedding. If you have a particular theme in mind, then try and go for a cake that will fit in with the overall style and look of the wedding. Think about what colours, decorations and designs would match the other elements. For example, if you're going for a Boho look, perhaps see if your vendors have designed a cake in a similar style before.
The devil is in the detail
When it comes to decorating cakes, the possibilities are endless. The most inexpensive option is fresh fruits or flowers that, in some instances, can be applied by your florist for a minimal fee. On the high end are delicate gum paste or sugar paste flowers, which are constructed by hand, one petal at a time. But here's the bottom line: All add-ons including marzipan fruits, chocolate-moulded flowers, cake toppers, and lace points will increase costs. (For the record, we think it's worth the cost!)
Show off your pride and joy
Your cake will likely be on display before it's cut and consumed. Elegantly styled dessert and cake tables can be a real talking point for your guests. A round table is perfect for round cakes, but a linear cake design may call for a rectangular table. Figure out your options. Once you have a cake table, have fun dressing it up: Drape it with sumptuous fabrics and decorate it with motifs, colours and flowers to match the cake (your florist can help).
Flavour is everything
Gone are the days of dry wedding fruit cake with layer upon layer of inedible fondant. Couples can now select from the widest range of wedding cake flavours and fillings, ensuring that your wedding cake matches you and your partner's palette perfectly. If you have no idea what you like, organise a taste test or enquire about samples...peace of mind will always take the cake.
Dietary Requirements
Keep in mind the dietary requirements of you and your guests, especially if there are any allergies to be aware of.
