Knowing where to begin looking for a wedding videographer isn’t easy, so we’ve come up with some suggestions to get you started. Plus, if you’re getting married in Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, the Southern Highlands, the Blue Mountains, the South Coast, the North Coast or elsewhere else in New South Wales, we simplify your search with a list of the Top 9 wedding videographers in the state — as voted by newly-weds and announced at the recent ABIA Wedding Awards.

Wedding videographers are memory makers, and while you’ll remember your wedding day in many ways — the perfume of flowers from a bridal bouquet, your ‘first-dance’ song playing on the radio, or a flick through your wedding photo album — nothing else will capture the ‘live action’, atmosphere, emotion and detail of your day like a wedding video or movie.

Do you really need a Wedding Videographer?

Your wedding is a day you’ll want to remember, but as anniversaries tick by it's natural for memories to fade, and a great wedding videographer is essential to ensuring that those precious moments, and all of those carefully-planned details, are captured forever in film format. You won’t get a ‘second-take’, so a professional wedding videographer will help preserve the sights, sounds and sentiment of the day for you, your family and future generations.

How to choose a Wedding Videographer?

You’ll be the stars of the show, so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with different filming styles and techniques to determine your preferences.

Filming methods range from documentary-style, to more artistic cinematic approaches, incorporating the likes of overlays and voice-overs. Coverage is generally edited to different time-lengths, ranging from short teasers, to high-light reels, ceremony edits, and longer full-features  — and same-day-edits, for viewing at the reception, are often an optional inclusion.

For the uninitiated it can all seem a little overwhelming to begin with, but brush-up on these movie-making terms and you’ll be an expert in an instant.

Wedding Teaser: A very short edit of the entire wedding, lasting approximately one minute, providing a snapshot of the day.

High-Light Reel: An abbreviated edit, combining key moments — the exchange of rings, the cake cutting and the first dance — in a three to five minute trailer.

Ceremony Edit: A fairly comprehensive, lightly edited, snapshot of the ceremony.

Full Feature: A longer, edited compilation of the day, usually lasting about 15 to 20 minutes.

Same-Day-Edit: An abbreviated edit of the day, offered by some videographers, for couples to play at their reception.

Transition: The shift between different shots or scenes

Overlay: The overlapping of different shots or scenes, often used to transition between them.

Filter: An artistic effect used to modify the appearance of lighting (vintage filters are a trending choice for weddings).

Background Music: Songs or musical compositions, added during the editing process, which often enhance the emotion of the visual shots.

Voice-Overs and Interviews: Sound recordings, often taken from wedding speeches or pre-wedding interviews, added during editing, to accompany and enhance the visuals.

Once you have a clearer idea of the editing lengths, filming techniques and wedding video styles you like, take a look at the websites of local wedding videographers. Many will include links to previous work, which will give you an idea of their particular approach, and help narrow your options.

Reviews from newlyweds are invaluable too, so scour the ABIA Directory for ratings and reviews on videographers, left by those who married recently. And, if you’re getting married in NSW — Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, the Southern Highlands, the Blue Mountains, the South Coast, the North Coast or further afield — check out the best nine videographers in the state, as announced at the recent ABIA Awards.

How was this NSW top list of wedding videographers compiled?

At ABIA Weddings, it is important to us that all wedding couples plan their special day with confidence, based on the recommendations of recently-married couples and their own real experiences. So, this list is solely based on the feedback of real customers who voted for their wedding videographer in the prestigious NSW ABIA Wedding Awards. Of particular note, this list is not a compilation of businesses with the most Instagram followers, or those who paid to get their name on a list.

Since 1996, ABIA have asked real brides and grooms to rate their wedding vendors out of 100% for:

  • Quality of Product and Experience
  • Quality of Service and Communication
  • Value for Money
  • Attitude of Staff and Friendliness

The New South Wales wedding videographers below are those that attained a combined rating of more than 95% in these categories, in order of achievement, and were announced as winners at the recent NSW ABIA Wedding Awards.
