If you’ve opened the envelope, pulled out the wedding invite and noticed the words ‘black-tie dress code’ written on the last line, here’s a quick guide to the type of attire that you'll be expected to wear, together with suggestions for men's and women's black-tie dressing.
Defining the black-tie wedding guest dress code
A step-down from ‘white-tie’, the most formal dress code, and a step up from wedding guest dress codes defined formal or cocktail, black-tie dressing conjures images of a James Bond movie set.
For male guests, black-tie generally requires a tuxedo, worn with a long-sleeved white dress shirt — ideally pleated at the front, with cufflinks securing the sleeve ends — a black bow-tie, a black vest or cummerbund and shiny black shoes.
For female guests black-tie dressing typically calls for an elegant, floor-length dress that covers the ankles, paired with heels and complementary jewellery and accessories.

What does ‘black-tie optional’ mean?
Occasionally — perhaps just to keep us all guessing — the fairly straightforward black-tie dress code is afforded ‘optional’ status. Essentially, ‘black-tie optional’ means men can switch the tux and bow-tie for a classic black suit and tie if preferred, and women can opt for gowns of a slightly shorter length. A look of sophistication is the general suggestion.
