ABIA meets Melbourne-based wedding make-up artist and hairstylist Prerna Kumar

It was the countless compliments she received after doing the make-up for her cousin’s wedding that inspired Prerna Kumar to begin her training in professional make-up artistry and launch Roma Makeup.
“I built my portfolio by collaborating with photographers and models,” she explains of those early days, but it wasn’t long before word-of-mouth spread and she was adding hairstyling and saree draping to her repertoire.
ABIA convinced Prerna to put down her make-up brushes for a minute to chat to us about her brides, her favourite make-up brands and the personalised approach that makes her wedding service so unique.

Roma Makeup is the go-to artist for all things glam — whether for business, weddings or special events. I offer make-up, hair and saree draping services to make my clients look and feel fabulous.

How did you get started in the wedding industry?
My journey into the wedding industry began after receiving countless compliments for doing my cousin’s wedding make-up. Inspired, I pursued professional training in make-up artistry, building my portfolio by collaborating with photographers and models. As word-of-mouth spread I expanded my services to include hairstyling and saree draping, combining my skills to offer a comprehensive bridal beauty experience. With a passion for making brides feel their most beautiful, I launched Roma Makeup and never looked back.

Where are you based and what locations do you service?
I'm a mobile make-up artist based in Melbourne, but I provide onsite services for weddings and events across Australia, sometimes with a travel fee.
When did you personally start using make-up?
My first make-up experiences were fun. I started as a teenager and always loved doing different looks on myself. Little did I know, those fun moments would spark a lifelong passion and career as a make-up artist!

When did you know that you wanted to become a professional make-up artist?
I knew I wanted to become a professional make-up artist after transforming my cousin into a glowing bride at her wedding. The joy and compliments were addictive — I was hooked and knew this was my calling!
How long have you been working in the wedding industry?
I’ve been specialising in wedding make-up and hairstyling for more than five years now.

What trends are you seeing in bridal hair and make-up looks at the moment?
Right now, I'm seeing brides embrace natural, glowing skin with soft, romantic make-up — think dewy cheeks and nude lips. For hair, effortless elegance is in — loose waves, boho braids, and chic updos adorned with delicate accessories. It's all about looking like the best version of yourself with a touch of fairy-tale magic!
Can you accommodate different skin types and tones?
Absolutely! I love working with all skin types and tones. Whether porcelain, caramel or deep chocolate, I’ve got the perfect products and techniques to make each bride’s beauty shine. Think of me as a beauty chameleon!

How do you ensure wedding make-up lasts all day?
I use top-quality, long-wear products and set everything with a magic touch of setting spray. Plus, I have a few secret tricks up my sleeve to ensure bridal make-up stays flawless from "I do" to the last dance!
Do you have a preferred make-up brand?
I adore many brands, but if I had to choose I'd say I'm a big fan of MAC Cosmetics for its vibrant colours and versatility. It's like the candy store of make-up! I absolutely adore the setting spray.

What makes your wedding service unique?
It's all about the personalised touch. I create custom looks that reflect each bride’s personality, ensuring they feel like the most beautiful version of themself. Plus, I bring the glam right to their door — stress-free and fabulous!
What was your favourite wedding?
Definitely the one where the bride and her squad had a surprise dance-off while I was doing their make-up! Laughter, love and a whole lot of glitter — it was unforgettable!
