Some people are born organisers, and Emily Lowndes admits she’s one of them.
“Even as a kid, people always told me I should plan events and, to this day, I still love organising,” she says.
Emily’s organisational talents led her to work at some of the most prestigious wedding venues on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. She established ‘Days Like These’ as a side-hustle in 2016, and her event planning business has since grown to become a full-time passion, incorporating photography and a team of highly-attentive wedding coordinators.
ABIA booked a slot in Emily’s busy diary to find out more.
Tell us about your business and wedding planning and photography services?
We offer a range of flexible services, from Full Wedding Planning to candid ‘fly-on-the-wall’ Wedding Photography, provided by our dedicated photographers.
Our ‘Wedding Planning Assistance’ package allows couples to book a minimum of 10 hours of our pre-wedding help, so that they can manage as much as possible by themselves, then call on our backup when they need it.
‘On The Day Coordination’ packages see us take over the planning about six weeks prior:
- managing logistics like site inspections
- run-sheets
- floorplans
- liaison with suppliers
- coordinating things on the day itself
- everything from coffee runs to sewing on loose buttons and remembering the tissues, even helping the best man with his buttonhole if he needs it!
How did you get started in the wedding industry?
I was always told I should plan events and by the age of 21 I was licensee of a pub. I studied tourism and events and, before I knew it, I was managing weddings and events for Zest Waterfront Venues and Jonah’s — two of the most sought-after venues on Sydney’s Northern Beaches — and organising 90 weddings a year. In 2016 I started ‘Days Like These Events’ as a side hustle, and it’s grown from there.
Where are you based and what locations do you service?
We are based on Sydney's Northern Beaches and service all of Australia. We’re also slowly, very slowly and cautiously, moving into the Bali market.
Where do you get your creative inspiration?
I do trawl Instagram, but also try to watch what my local wedding community is doing. I strongly believe that every bride is different, and their wedding should be what they want, so I’m also guided by their vision.
What are your favourite photographic locations?
We love Bebeah Farm, north of Sydney — it has so many different locations all at one address. We’re also big fans of Sandy Point Lane in Palm Beach.
What's the most interesting wedding request you’ve had, or photo you've taken?
We once photographed a bride completely nude in the forest, before she put on her wedding dress!
What do you suggest couples look for in an event coordinator and a photographic service?
Find someone who suits their vibe. Vibe is important!
What makes your service unique?
We’re not stylists, we’re logistics coordinators. So, instead of just offering a full wedding planning package, we offer pre-wedding planning assistance and on-the-day coordination. We give our couples the chance to begin the planning process and then have us as a shoulder to lean on (or cry on) if they need it. We aim to be their ‘best wedding friend’ and support in one, and to be available 24/7, if required.
What was your favourite wedding?
I have so many, but my favourite weddings come down to the personalities of the couples, rather than the details or locations.
How would you describe the couples that you connect with the most?
Happy-go-lucky! I don’t mind stressed couples — weddings can be stressful, so that’s a given —but like-minded, happy couples are the best!
