In 10 years working in the wedding industry, bridal make-up artist Michelle Majuru has seen trends come and go, but credits her own consistent style to the ongoing success of her business.

“All my clients leave feeling beautiful, sexy and confident,” Michelle emphasises.

Tailoring her make-up to every complexion has also given Michelle an edge, as has her savvy approach to social media and advertising, which has drawn the attention of major cosmetics brands and celebrities.

We took a seat in Michelle’s make-up chair to learn more about how she started out, and the wedding make-up trends she’s seeing, and loving, right now.

Tell us about your business and bridal make-up service.

I began freelancing as a professional make-up artist in 2013, when I was juggling university and teaching. My aim has always been to cater to all skin complexions, and 10 years on I put my success down to my masterful technique and making sure all my clients leave feeling beautiful, sexy and confident, whether it be for a special occasion or their wedding day.

How did you get started in the wedding industry?

I started with one wedding make-up client, and from there it was all word-of-mouth and advertising through social media.

Where are you based and what locations do you service?

I’m based in Liverpool, but service the whole of Sydney as well as interstate.

When did you first start using make-up? Do you remember your first experience?

My first real experience with make-up was in high school, when I did my own formal make-up.

When did you know that you wanted to do make-up professionally?

When I finished high school I started a YouTube channel sharing my make-up tips. That’s when I knew I could utilise my skills elsewhere.

What have been some of the highlights of your professional make-up career?

I have landed some impressive jobs in the make-up industry, and worked with some top make-up brands, including M.A.C Cosmetics, L'Oréal, Maybelline and Il Makiage. I was also named the official make-up artist for H.E.R. during her tour of Australia.

How long have you been working in the industry? How have wedding make-up trends changed over the years?

I’ve been working in the industry for 10 years and have seen make-up trends change drastically. These days, my clients are all for full dewy glam, and natural glossy lippie.

What trends are you seeing in bridal make-up at the moment?

A lot of my brides want dewy make-up, lots of highlighter and neutral lips.

How do you manage different skin types and complexions?

I find it easiest to talk to my clients about their skin type and what works for them. They can usually tell me what their skin is like, and I always try to find products that will cater to them.

I also always carry a variety of products for differing complexions, and customise colours based on individual needs.

Do you have a preferred make-up brand?

At the moment I am loving the Charlotte Tilbury foundations and highlighter.

What makes your wedding make-up service unique?

The service I provide, the quality of my work and the exceptional time-management I offer, are what set me apart.
