Shevoune Lim was just five-years-old when she learned how to braid, and has little doubt that her fascination with hair and makeup originated with her extended family.

“All my Dad’s sisters are hairdressers and beauticians,” Shevoune explains. So, after a stint as an event manager, it seemed a natural progression for her to move into the realm of beauty.

A decade on, she’s seen hair and makeup trends come and go, and has learned to cater specifically to the styling needs of those with Asian features.

ABIA took a seat in Shevoune’s salon chair to chat cosmetic brands, styling looks and her love of cultural weddings.

Tell us about your business and hair and makeup services.

We offer a range of services related to special occasion and wedding hair and makeup, and specialise in catering to Asian features.

How did you get started in the wedding industry?

I started out as an event manager, but I loved the backstage activities. I’m a qualified beautician and have completed courses in hair and makeup, so eventually I decided to follow my passion to help people look and feel their best on their wedding day.

What area do you service?

I cater to the Melbourne area.

When did you personally start using makeup and doing your own hair?

I’ve known how to braid hair since I was five, and started using makeup when I was 14. Many of my aunts are hairdressers, makeup artists and beauticians, so I’ve always had an interest in the field.

How long have you been working in the industry? How have wedding hair and makeup trends changed over the years?

I’ve been in the industry since 2013, and I’ve definitely seen wedding hair and makeup trends change — from blue eyeshadows and skinny eyebrows, to sculpted-eye looks and thick eyebrows!

What trends are you seeing in bridal hair and makeup at the moment?

I’m seeing trends in Thai-style makeup, flawless skin, bronze glows, soft glows, high up-dos, pony tails and modern-twist vintage waves.

Do you have preferred brands?

Charlotte Tilbury is my go-to brand at the moment. Jouer, Makeup By Mario and LiveGlam are some of my other favourites.

What was your most memorable wedding hair and makeup moment?

My sister’s wedding — I had to do everyone’s hair and makeup, and organise her wedding! Luckily, I had my team of talented hair and makeup artists to help me!

What makes your service unique?

I specialise in catering to the specific needs of Asian clients, and happily share my recommendations for pre-wedding skincare and looks that will go with a wedding colour theme or dress.

Do you have a favourite wedding?

I love seeing brides in their own cultural wedding dress, so traditional wedding ceremonies are my favourites.

How would you describe those you connect with the most?

I feel that I connect well with all my brides — we always have a great chat and a laugh, at both the trial and on the wedding day.
