Ali Badiei started deejaying almost 30 years ago, and bringing a dancefloor to life still thrills him to this day. Indeed, it was this passion that first inspired him to establish Black Cherry Events, with the idea of offering a new take on wedding entertainment to the couples of Adelaide.

Nearly a decade on, having been joined by professional DJ Matt Malyschko who manages much of the day-to-day and client communication, Black Cherry Events has established itself as the entertainment vendor of choice for many couples marrying in South Australia.

“We don’t just play music, we create experiences,” explains Ali of his company’s combined deejay, emcee, wedding music and special effects offering.

To find out more, we spent some time chatting to him about song requests, bongo players and creating ‘wow factor’.

Black Cherry Events is a full-service wedding entertainment agency. We can manage a couple’s wedding music and ‘all things entertainment’ from the ceremony to reception. We’re all about bringing good vibes and excitement to the wedding day.

We offer a unique range of music and entertainment services — from professional DJs and MCs to saxophone and bongo players — and can supply ‘wow factor’ in the form of indoor fireworks and dry ice effects.

Our crew have been turning up the fun in Adelaide for more than 10 years and continue to help couples create everlasting memories. We don’t just play music, we create experiences and our dedicated team works with couples throughout the entire wedding planning journey to stage an event truly reflective of their style and preferences, offering suggestions and insights, and answering any questions.

How did you get started in the wedding industry?

I’ve been in the music and entertainment industry for more than 20 years. I have a passion for music and creating fun on the dance floor, so I started Black Cherry Events to change the way people think about wedding entertainment.

Where are you based and what locations do you service?

We are based in Adelaide and service all of South Australia.

What types of wedding entertainment and special effects do you offer?

We provide deejay and emcee services, acoustic artists, saxophonists and bongo players, plus we offer a range of special effects, like venue lighting, indoor fireworks and dry ice to highlight moments like the first dance or newlyweds’ entrance.

How long have you been interested in wedding music and special effects?

Probably too long to remember but we are always looking to the future and want to be innovative in our wedding entertainment and offerings.

At what point in their wedding planning should couples consider entertainment and special effects?

We believe it should be one of the first things they do. As soon as they have a venue, they should be booking their entertainment vendors, as the hosting, music and special effects are some of the most important elements of the wedding day and a good entertainment company will be able to provide all sorts of valuable help and advice.

What should couples look for in a wedding MC and DJ?

The most important factors are good processes, communication and experience. If a DJ or MC combines all three of these qualities, they’re more likely to understand the needs of their couples and tailor packages to suit them and their guests.

Do you see certain trends in your industry? What’s popular with couples at the moment?

The biggest trend we’ve seen in recent years has been the addition of live elements to wedding deejaying, like bongo playing, saxophone solos and violinists.

What are the most popular song and music requests?

Always ABBA! It's always the classics that are the winners and most requested.

What makes your service stand out?

What makes us unique is the fact that we don’t just play music, firstly we get to intimately know our couples and understand their vision, then we perfect the ambience, from sound to lighting, making every corner of a venue pop. As Adelaide’s only entertainment provider with an in-house sound and lighting technician, we can also ensure that every detail is flawlessly executed.

How would you describe the couples you connect with the most?

We have couples from all backgrounds and walks of life, from librarians to paramedics, and cater to occasions from multicultural weddings to couples who live interstate and are getting married in Adelaide. We absolutely love getting to know all our couples and making their wedding vison come to life.
