A moment with 'Boho Brides'
ABIA meets Nikki Fielding of this Yarrabilba-based bridal hair and make-up service
Love From Luna
It was her own experience, trying to find the right wedding hair stylist, that lead Nikki Fielding to start Yarrabilla hair salon and mobile hair and make-up service Boho Brides.
“I got married in 2015 and had trouble finding the look and feel I wanted from a bridal hair stylist,” she explains.
A decade on, she leads a handpicked team of 10 skilled wedding hair and make-up professionals, who go out of their way to make their brides feel comfortable, at ease and supported throughout their wedding journey.
To discover more, ABIA chatted with Nikki about preferred products, evolving hair and make-up trends for weddings and her childhood love of hair.

Tell us about your business and bridal hair and make-up service.
I started Boho Brides in 2015 as a solo hair stylist and over the years it’s developed and grown. These days we are an elite team of 10 hair and make-up artists providing a mobile service or salon experience for brides, from our Yarrabilba hairdressing salon, which also offers organic hair colour, hair extensions, style cutting and an holistic approach to hair care.
I also design and handmake dried-flower hair pieces, personalised for brides who request them. I’ve been a hair stylist for 24 years and have carefully selected every member of our Boho Brides’ team, who each undergo in-house training and undertake external training each year.
How did you get started in the wedding industry?
In the beginning I was nervous about bridal hairstyling, but when an opportunity arose to focus on bridal hairdressing I embraced it and quickly built the knowledge and confidence to go out on my own. I got married in 2015 and had trouble finding the look and feel I wanted from a bridal hair stylist, and that’s how Boho Brides began.
Where are you based and what locations do you service?
Boho Brides is based in Yarrabilba and caters to the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Redlands, Logan and the hinterland regions. We also take bookings for destination weddings.

Did you always want to be a hairdresser? What were some of your early hair experiences?
Like all kids I cut and styled my dolls’ hair all the time and my Year 6 report card indicated I would do much better if I focussed on school work instead of hair. So, I guess I’ve always been interested in hairstyling. My first hair-colouring experience involved bright blue on my blonde hair — which has never been the same since — but my technique improved considerably when I took a hairdressing apprenticeship at the age of 16.
When did you know you wanted hair and make-up to be your profession?
Accepting that high school hairdressing apprenticeship was probably the turning point and when I ended up working with a team that felt like family it reinforced my decision. That boss was an amazing make-up artist and one of the senior hairdressers was an incredible up-stylist, so I worked out young how much I loved hair and make-up.

What trends are you seeing in bridal hair at the moment?
The boho-vibe for wedding hair is very hot right now! Visually simple styles — that often actually require a very technical approach — are also proving popular.
How do you manage different skin tones and complexions when it comes to wedding make-up?
Our team carries a wide variety of make-up that is intermixable and buildable. Consultation is also key to achieving the best results, coverage and durability and advice on skin prep is crucial, so we address this at make-up trials.

What make-up and haircare brands do you work with?
Our make-up team carries a variety of brands, including Jane Iredale, MAC Cosmetics, Estée Lauder, Dior and Morphe, which are most commonly used in bridal applications.
For hairstyling we carry a variety of brands too, but KYK Hair Care and Pure are favourites.
What's been your most memorable wedding hair or make-up moment?
I love a big reveal, when we’ve been working on a bride all morning who doesn’t want to look until the end. The moment they look up to see the end result is magical — and it’s often filled with happy tears.

Where do you see your business in the future?
One day I’d love to be able to offer a full beauty salon experience, in addition to our salon hair services, to complete the whole hair and beauty package leading up to the wedding day.
What makes your wedding make-up and hairstyling service unique?
Our hair and make-up team are all easy to relate to and have approachable personalities. When we come to work, we know it is not about us and our aim is to make each bride feel comfortable. We want our clients to feel at ease making requests and changes and to feel supported on one of the most special days of their lives.
We also understand that each bridal booking is about the journey, not just the wedding day, so we gift our package clients a prep box of hair, skin, tanning and beauty items. We also provide touch-up kits for all make-up services and our packages are all inclusive, with no hidden fees.
Our team can also cater to very large bookings, so can accommodate two brides and bridal parties for same-sex weddings and even work across two locations if necessary.
