Formerly a fashion designer in India, Ashima Singh had always been drawn to creative pursuits, but it was her daughter who inspired the move into wedding decorating after seven years living in Melbourne.
“When she started school, l was looking for something that would give me the flexibility to be there for her,” Ashima points out. “I did my research and started Singh Events”.
Since that beginning in 2018, Ashima has never looked back, and offers event styling, planning, management, a venue, and prop hire in combination, importing the latest products and styles from around the globe to ensure the best for her Melbourne-based clientele.
ABIA sat down with Ashima to talk colour schemes, trending themes and her love of lighting fixtures.

Tell us about your wedding services.
We offer wedding styling and decorating, event planning and management, and a venue hall, together with wedding prop hire. We import the latest props from all over the world to ensure we have the lastest trends and highest quality to offer our customers.
How did you get started in the wedding industry?
I’d been working in childcare for many years, then in 2018, with my daughter starting school, I was looking for a career that would give me the flexibility to be there for her. I did my research, started Singh Events, and the rest is history.
Where are you based and what locations do you service?
We are based in Epping, but provide our services all over Melbourne.

How do you suggest couples begin deciding on their wedding theme and decorations? Where should they look for inspiration?
We have tons of inspiration, and quality examples of our work, on our website and our social media handles, so I suggest they start there.
Then, they can get in touch with us and we can work with them to create a mood board, incorporating the latest trends, to cater to their particular occasion and target audience.
Were you always interested in decorating?
Yes, since childhood I’ve had an interest in all things creative and I grew up watching my mum decorate for our birthdays. When I left school I studied for a degree in fashion design and modelled and hosted fashion shows in India.

What are some of the more popular decorating themes and effects you are seeing right now? Is anything 'trending'?
We’re seeing a lot of change around colour schemes, with a mix of pastels and brights. We’re also seeing lots of abstract and asymmetrical designs in terms of backdrops. Backdrops, chandeliers and other light fixtures are really in.
What decorations and effects do you recommend for couples who want to go ‘all out’ to impress?
Royal colours really make an impact, huge setups also really make a statement, and I always suggest the addition of light fixtures.
How far in advance should couples book your services?
We can work with a minimum of two weeks, but the sooner the better really.

What makes your service unique?
As a special touch we provide a customised computer mock-up of each client’s wedding decoration design so that they can visualise how their space will look when filled with our props and backdrops. That way they can see how many props they need and how our customised design backgrounds will look on their wedding day.
What was your favourite wedding?
My favourite would have to be one we did for a couple who requested we fill their wedding venue with pastel pink cherry blossom and blush rose flowers.
How would you describe the couples you connect with the most?
They’re lively, lovely people.
