A moment with ‘Violin Sparkle’
ABIA meets Melbourne solo violinist Katherine Avgerinou
NS Productions
Growing up in a musical family, with a Greek father and an Albanian mother, Katherine Avgerinou of Violin Sparkle embraced music from an early age.
“I was surrounded by a rich tapestry of musical influences that shaped my diverse artistic voice,” the Melbourne-based musical entertainer explains.
These days, she draws on that diversity, and her classical music training, to offer her wedding couples a musical repertoire that extends from classic to contemporary, both as a solo violinist and in collaborative performances with other musicians.
Katherine set aside her bow momentarily, to talk us through her musical journey, and the elegant performances, gowns, musical compositions and thoughtful details that make her wedding ceremony and reception music standout.

Tell us about your wedding music and entertainment services.
Through Violin Sparkle I offer exquisite wedding ceremony and reception violin music, blending both contemporary and classical genres. Whether performing solo, or collaborating with other musicians and DJs, I aim to add a touch of elegance that enhances the atmosphere of each event. I don’t just offer a ‘service’, I create an artistic experience for my audiences and every detail, from my refined appearance to my distinctive violin sound and exceptional performance, is meticulously-crafted to elevate each celebration.
How did you get started in the wedding industry?
My journey in the wedding industry began while I was living in Greece, where I worked with various classical quartets and duos, crafting unforgettable musical moments for European couples and audiences. In late 2023, I debuted Violin Sparkle in Australia and my music has been warmly welcomed by the Melbourne community and wedding industry — I’ve performed at a diverse range of churches and wedding venues, blending different cultures and musical styles to create truly unique and memorable experiences.

Where are you based and what locations do you service?
I’m based in Melbourne but am happy to travel to regional areas of Victoria, and to other states across Australia, to ensure every couple can experience the elegance of Violin Sparkle, wherever their location.
At what age did you start playing the violin and when did you realise you wanted to turn your talent into your profession?
I began playing the violin at the age of six, having already started piano lessons even earlier. Growing up in a musical family — my father and grandfather both performed in the European wedding industry — music was a natural part of my upbringing.
I pursued classical music studies, but my heart was always drawn to a wide range of genres and I was raised in a multicultural household — with a Greek father and an Albanian mother — so I was surrounded by a rich tapestry of musical influences that shaped my diverse artistic voice.
To this day, I don’t view my music as simply a business. To me, violin playing is a heartfelt, artistic contribution to moments that celebrate love and joy.

What childhood memories do you have of learning the violin?
I fondly remember performing in front of audiences from a very young age, starting with school concerts and music competitions. Some of my most cherished memories come from playing with youth orchestras — an experience that deepened my love of ensemble performance. There’s something truly magical about making music as a group, and I’ve always believed that the real magic happens when we come together, not when we stand alone. That’s why I craft my backing tracks with great care — layering them thoughtfully to blend seamlessly with my live violin, and incorporating other instruments and sonic elements to elevate the atmosphere.
What other instruments do you play?
In addition to the violin, I also play piano, drums, guitar and bouzouki — skills I’ve developed through my work as a contemporary composer and music director. The violin has been the greatest challenge of my life though, and also the most rewarding. I see it as more than just an instrument, it’s a mirror of my personality and values. My journey as a professional violinist has shaped me — I wouldn’t be the person I am today without it.

What genres of music do you play and which are your favourite?
Although classically-trained, my passion extends far beyond the classical realm. I love exploring and performing across musical genres — especially pop, contemporary, rock, folk, world music, EDM and anything new that crosses my path. I’m constantly experimenting with fresh techniques and sounds, and always open to musical discovery.
What does the future hold for you and Violin Sparkle?
I’m currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Practice, driven by a passion to never stop learning and evolving my art. I hope to continue making couples’ weddings unforgettable with my music, expanding my reach to other event formats and stages and collaborating with fellow artists across different creative fields.
What’s the most inspiring wedding idea you’ve come across?
I especially appreciate when couples take the time to thoughtfully select their songs. One memorable bride asked me to blend the bridal party’s entrance with her own, creating a unique musical transition that beautifully tied the two moments together. It was a creative challenge — that required studio work to craft a custom backing track — but the collaboration made the event feel truly personal and unforgettable.

What should couples look for in a wedding entertainer, and how far should they book in advance?
I understand that entertainment — particularly hiring a violinist — isn’t usually the first priority for couples planning a wedding. There are so many major decisions to make early on, so I encourage couples to consider their musical entertainment once the key locations and vendors are in place. This allows them to explore their options without stress or budget pressure, and to choose what truly fits their vision. Every artist — whether a DJ, band or instrumentalist — brings their own style and aesthetic, so it’s important that couples find the right fit for their dream atmosphere. I recommend reaching out anywhere from a year to two months before the big day, if considering a violinist, to help ensure availability and allow for proper planning.
What makes your offering unique?
I care deeply about my art and the experience I create for every couple. So, I offer smooth, stress-free planning, personalised music advice for those unsure about song choices or logistics, and complimentary consultations to help couples craft the perfect soundtrack for their day. My flexible packages are also designed to suit a wide range of needs and styles.
I care deeply about quality, which is why I bring both my high-end violins to every event —ready to match any sound, from the elegance of Baroque to the edge of rock. My appearance is also an extension of my art. I love sweeping into a venue in a dramatic gown (red is my favourite) paired with flawless hair and make-up. I believe in details, not perfection — because that’s where the magic lives. It’s the little things that set an experience apart and make it unforgettable.
